Shrimp are known to be bottom dwelling creatures, which graze on Organic substrate in the pond bottom, such case the chances of exchange of disease causing bacteria between pond bottom and Shrimp is ore often possible, a major risk factor in shrimp ponds, affecting profitability and sustainability of the Aqua Industry. The use of antibiotics to control pathogenic bacteria lead to an increase of Vibriosis problems, mutate in to more virulent bacterial pathogens.

Probiotics, are one such approach, where beneficial bacteria introduced in to pond system restrict the growth of pathogenic bacteria, by way of competitive elimination.
